Text description provided by the architects. The Little Art Studio is a 1400SF addition to an existing contemporary stucco and glass residence.  The addition of this project to the site provided a backdrop and bookend to an existing desert courtyard and a gathering area surrounding a fire pit.   In order to distinguish the studio from the existing residence, the design allowed the studio to establish its own identity.  The manner in which the addition meets the ground plane was executed in a way that minimizes the disturbance to the existing desert landscape.  The steel beam floor structure and composite concrete deck, is supported by six 36” diameter concrete caissons allowing the studio to “float” over an existing wash by touching the ground in only these six locations.  By spanning over the wash, the design further distinguishes this new addition in contrast to the conventional slab on grade construction of the existing main residence. The cladding of the studio is largely comprised of standard 10 gage 4’ X 12’ tall A606 weathering steel panels.  Using the standard module for the steel panels allowed for minimal preparation and fabrication time. High thermal performing refle...

Tire Damage on 2019 Genesis G70 Results in Close Shave | News

Sometime this summer, Cars.com’s long-term test car and recipient of our Best of 2019 award, the Genesis G70, developed a gouge in the passenger-side front tire. Whodunnit? We’re not sure when, where or how it happened, because multiple Cars.com editors share the car for the purpose documenting our experience across a year of ownership, but we sent it in for service to get a closer inspection. On Sept. 16, we emailed a photo of the damaged tire to the service advisor, who reckoned it would need replacing. Two days later, the dealership sent a service valet (a perk with every Genesis purchase) to swap our car for a loaner G80. Upon receiving our G70, the service department measured the other three tires — all Michelin Primacy MXM4 P225/45R18s — and reported remaining tread depths of 6/32nd to 7/32nd of an inch. Tire tread is measured in 32nds of an inch, and tires typically need replacement before reaching 2/32nds. Ours began with 9.5/32nd of an inch, a Michelin representative confirmed by phone. Our dealership’s service technician said the difference in tread between the new tire and its semi-worn counterparts would border on excessive and, since our car has all-wheel drive, mi...

Pretreatment with β-Boswellic Acid Improves Blood Stasis Induced Endothelial Dysfunction: Role of eNOS Activation

Thank you for visiting nature.com. You are using a browser version with limited support for CSS. To obtain the best experience, we recommend you use a more up to date browser (or turn off compatibility mode in Internet Explorer). In the meantime, to ensure continued support, we are displaying the site without styles and JavaScript. Vascular endothelial cells play an important role in modulating anti-thrombus and maintaining the natural function of vascular by secreting many active substances. β-boswellic acid (β-BA) is an active triterpenoid compound from the extract of boswellia serrate. In this study, it is demonstrated that β-BA ameliorates plasma coagulation parameters, protects endothelium from blood stasis induced injury and prevents blood stasis induced impairment of endothelium-dependent vasodilatation. Moreover, it is found that β-BA significantly increases nitric oxide (NO) and cyclic guanosine 3’, 5’-monophosphate (cGMP) levels in carotid aortas of blood stasis rats. To stimulate blood stasis-like conditions in vitro, human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were exposed to transient oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD). Treatment of β-BA significantly increase...

Malaysia relaxes VEP enforcement due to RFID installation issues | Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Authorities will not perform Vehicle Entry Permit (VET) checks at “peak hours” until further notice, the Transport Ministry (MoT) said when acknowledging complaints about installation headaches for the needed tags. Without specifying what constituted peak hours, it said this deferment would apply at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) and Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar (KSAB) entry points from Singapore. “In light of several issues made known to themMinistry including the difficulties to get appointment for RFID Tag installation, the ministry will defer enforcement of VEP on all outbound traffic at both KSAB and BSI during peak-hour traffic operation until further notice,” said the statement today. Malaysia announced in 2017 that all foreign-registered vehicles entering the country will require the VEP, which it said was meant to tackle car theft and cloning syndicates as well as prevent vehicles with outstanding fines from leaving the country. In April, the ministry said that the VEP will be enforced from October after the grace period for foreign motorists to install the necessary equipment. However, Singaporean commuters have raised problems such as difficu...

Tuning from failed superconductor to failed insulator with magnetic field

Do charge modulations compete with electron pairing in high-temperature copper oxide superconductors? We investigated this question by suppressing superconductivity in a stripe-ordered cuprate compound at low temperature with high magnetic fields. With increasing field, loss of three-dimensional superconducting order is followed by reentrant two-dimensional superconductivity and then an ultraquantum metal phase. Circumstantial evidence suggests that the latter state is bosonic and associated with the charge stripes. These results provide experimental support to the theoretical perspective that local segregation of doped holes and antiferromagnetic spin correlations underlies the electron-pairing mechanism in cuprates. A variety of electronic orders have been proposed and/or observed to exist within the generic phase diagram of copper oxide high-temperature superconductors (1), and most are commonly viewed as competing with the superconducting order. In the case of charge stripe order (2), however, it has been argued that electron pairing and superconducting order can actually be intertwined with the charge modulations (3). Moreover, increasingly powerful numerical calculations i...

The Iotty Smart Switch is one of the most elegant lighting controls you’ll see at CES

Smart lighting controls are all over the CES show floor this year, but Iotty has one of the most beautiful. It’s similar to the Noon Lighting System we recently fawned over with regard to its glass touchscreen, but where Noon’s Extension switches are ordinary plastic, every Iotty switch looks beautiful. The switches—available in single-, double-, and triple-gang configurations—replace both your existing switch and its switch cover with a plate of tempered glass. A dimmable backlight casts a glow on the wall behind the glass, making the switch easy to find in a darkened room. Iotty (pronounced “eye-ottie”) currently offers the switches in five colors: white, black, gray, tan, or blue. They connect directly to your Wi-Fi network, eliminating the need for a ZigBee or Z-Wave smart home hub. There is support for Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, so you can also control lights with voice commands. Iotty’s app lets you schedule your lights, turn them on at sunset and off at sunrise, or even according to the weather. The app will also monitor your energy consumption, put lights into an “away” mode that turns them on and off at random times to simulate occupancy, and more. You can also ...
