CNC carving is quite commonplace in maker circles, especially for large, strong parts. If you find

CNC carving is quite commonplace in maker circles, especially for large, strong parts. If you find yourself wondering which machine among dozens to choose for milling wood, here are some of the best to get the job done. The marriage of a wood block and a CNC mill could be just what your project needs. Because if you’re trying to pick which color of PLA to print that coffee table with, you’ve got a problem. (Or the need for a humongous spool of filament to mount on an equally huge 3D printer.) CNC carving wood is a useful process, not just because of the size capabilities, but also for the aesthetic and material properties of wood. Napkin rings, for instance, bring a more cozy feel to the kitchen table when produced in wood as opposed to plastic. Plus, you avoid bringing bioplastics near your food. But how do you pick a machine out of the many out there? Well, you can get a head start with this list of some of the best CNC carving machines, refreshed for 2019. No list about CNC carving machines in 2019 could get away without mentioning Carbide 3D’s Shapeoko. This beast of a machine needs no introduction – it earned the status of Editor’s Choice CNC machine quite recently, after ...

Beidou-3 navigation satellite launched on Long March 3B

China successfully launched a new navigation satellite on Saturday. The launch – later noted to be Beidou-3I1Q (IGSO-1) – took place from the LC3 Launch Complex of the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, Sichuan province, using a Long March-3B/G2 (Chang Zheng-3B/G2) launch vehicle. Launch time was 14:41 UTC. Also designated Beidou-44, the satellite is part of the GEO component of the 3rd phase of the Chinese Beidou (Compass) satellite navigation system, using both geostationary satellites and satellites in intermediate orbits. The satellites are based on the DFH-3B Bus. This bus has a payload increased to 450 kg and payload power to 4,000 W. They feature a phased array antenna for navigation signals and a laser retroreflector and additionally deployable S/L-band and C-band antennas. With a launch mass of 4,600 kg, spacecraft dimensions are noted to be 2.25 by 1.0 by 1.22 meters. Previous Beidou satellites were orbited on November 18, 2018, with a Long March-3B/YZ-1 launch vehicle launching the Beidou-3M17 (Beidou-42) and Beidou-3M18 (Beidou-43) satellites from Xicheng. The Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) has been independently constructed, developed and operated by China t...

When you buy something using the retail links in our stories, we may earn a small commission. Outside does not accept money for editorial gear reviews. Read more about our policy. There was a period in my life when I used a series of disposable plastic baggies to organize all of my things when I traveled. Socks went into gallon Ziplocs, cords into sandwich bags, extra batteries into snack bags—it was a simple system. The only problem? Unless you’re packing a turkey sandwich, disposable bags are too flimsy and fragile to store things reliably. And they’re bad for the planet. Fortunately, there’s a stuffsack for every situation, whether I’m trying to compress a load, separate my socks from my undies, or keep my chargers and cords dry. Here are my favorites. The StraightJacket is not your standard drawstring stuffsack: it has a long zipper for access, with three additional straps that you buckle and tighten to compress the load. When flattened, it has a rectangular shape, which helps remove dead space if you’re packing it in a square roller bag or at the bottom of your multi-day backpack. Choose from three sizes—8, 12, or 20 liters—all of which are made from a lightweight 40-denier...

Lanternflies bugging everyone involved | News, Sports, Jobs

KUTZTOWN — In the Great Spotted Lanternfly War, Pennsylvania’s citizen-soldiers are fighting back with fly swatters and vacuums, dish soap and sticky tape. They’re stomping and spraying and zapping and bragging about their kills on social media. “DESTROY THEM,” a propaganda poster urges. “Die, die, die, spotted lanternfly,” a balladeer sings. And still the invaders come, hordes of them, relentless and seemingly inexhaustible. The lanternflies’ rampage has been slowed but not stopped. The insect — a large, colorful planthopper native to southeast Asia — has emerged as a serious pest since the federal government confirmed its arrival in southeastern Pennsylvania five years ago. It sucks the sap from valuable trees and vines, weakening them. It rains its clear, sticky, sugary waste — euphemistically called “honeydew” — onto pools and decks, driving exasperated homeowners indoors when they’re not too busy killing the fluttering buggers. Lanternflies aren’t shy, either. They will fly in your face, land on your shirt and crawl on the back of your neck. More worrisome, the state agriculture department says the lanternflies threaten $18 billion worth of Pennsylvania agriculture, includ...

Testing the HEX Jim Lee Collectors Backpack at New York Comic Con

It seems I’ve always got some interesting new thing to review here at Batman News, and today, I’ve got another first: a backpack. Now, to some of you, that might sound terribly uninteresting. Maybe you haven’t worn a backpack since grade school, and you can’t conceive of any reason to start wearing one again. But for many of you—especially those of you who attend comic/pop culture conventions—finding the right bag to carry your stuff is a real concern. Earlier this year, legendary Batman artist Jim Lee partnered with fashion brand HEX to develop two distinct backpacks: one for artists, and one for collectors. They successfully Kickstarted the line, and now they’re available to the general public. HEX sent Batman News a Collectors Backpack a few weeks ago, and so with New York Comic Con on the horizon, I agreed to take it for a spin. Is it different enough from other packs to justify its existence? Does it have enough storage space to pack supplies for a day in the big city? And, most importantly, does it protect comic books and other collectibles? Read on. The Kickstarter campaign for these bags included limited edition versions featuring Bat-symbol zipper pulls (Nolan Dark Kni...

Protests ramp up as Hong Kong prepares for China’s national day

Protests which have rocked Hong Kong for months intensified today as the city prepares for China’s national day this week. Police opened fire with tear gas canisters, rubber bullets and water cannon as protesters threw petrol bombs at authorities and into a government building. Protesters are demanding universal sufferage, and charges to be dropped against their fellow demonstrators. Carrie Lam, the city’s leader, is set to leave Hong Kong for the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the communist party taking control of China. Today protesters dressed in black shielded themselves against tear gas behind the movement’s now iconic umbrellas. Stage lighting “We won’t look the other way, when the people of Hong Kong are beaten indiscriminately on commuter trains for exercising the right to peaceful protest,” he told the Conservative Party conference. Compost gets high mark from hemp producer | The Brattleboro Reformer

BRATTLEBORO — Windham Solid Waste Management District’s Brattlegrow Compost has found a fan in the hemp industry. “Man, it’s been a phenomenal product,” said Josh Turner, director of cultivation and plant services at Heritage Hemp LLC in Northampton, Mass. Heritage is harvesting about 112 acres of hemp this year in a certified organic process across approximately 17 farms in western Massachusetts, mostly along the Interstate 91 corridor of the Pioneer Valley. The group makes cannabidiol or CBD oil and medical marijuana. Turner recalled using about 20 cubic yards of Brattlegrow as fertilizer on farmland in Bernardston, Mass. He said he has been “absolutely amazed at how our plants have responded to it.” Heritage started getting off the ground in November 2018 with Turner coming on board as consultant a month later. A friend later connected him with Bob Spencer, executive director of Windham Solid Waste in Brattleboro. “I’ve been in the hemp industry since 2014 and cannabis industry for just over 15 years legitimately,” Turner said. “I’ve seen and used just about all the products that are there … so I was real...
